Getting The Most Out of Your New iPhone or iPad
So you’ve unwrapped your brand new iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and you’ve set it up for the first time. Congratulations! You’ve got a powerful device to work and play with. But what do you with it now?
Hopefully you have the basics of phoning, emailing and sending text messages under control. If not, you might want to take a look at the iPhone User Guide. It’s dense, but as a reference for the technical nitty gritty it’s unbeatable.
But these devices are far more than just phones or music players. They’re tiny, powerful computers, and you can do a lot with them – provided you take a few minutes to learn what they’re capable of.
Syncing
To save yourself trouble down the road, you should consider syncing your new device to iTunes on a computer you own before doing much else. Though iOS (the iPhone operating system) is closer to a post-PC world than ever before, there are still a few things you can’t do easily without syncing, like managing movies and photos from your PC. Since the first sync tends to clear off most of your content, start off well by syncing first.
To do that, take the sync cable that came with your device and plug it into a USB slot on your PC or Mac. Open iTunes, and plug the other end of the sync cable into the slot on the bottom of your device. You should see your iPhone appear under Devices in the sidebar. Now you can move through the tabs in iTunes to add music, movies, ringtones, photos and more. Once you’ve selected everything you want to add, click Apply or Sync.
Once the first sync finishes, you can check the box that says “Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi” if both your computer and your device will be on the same Wi-Fi network. That will save you from having to deal with the sync cable again.
Apps
Once you’ve completed your first sync, you can dive in and do anything you’d like. The obvious starting place is to download some apps. Start by tapping the App Store icon.
From here you can download just about anything. Some apps are free, some have costs. To download them, you’ll need to enter your iTunes login (or register a new iTunes account). If an app has a cost, it will be charged to whatever payment information is associated with your account.
Security
If you don’t want people mishandling your phone, going through your email or posting on your Facebook account, you might want to consider locking your phone down. To do that, open the Settings app and click General. Then scroll down to Passcode Lock. This lets you set a four-digit lock on your phone that will need to be entered if your phone is locked. You can lock your phone by tapping the power button on the upper right of the device, or you can set an Auto-Lock timer in the same menu.
iOS also boasts a comprehensive set of parental features if you plan to share your iPhone or iPad with your children. We’ve gone into detail about these restrictions, but the most important thing to be aware of is that you should never give your iTunes password to anyone, especially a child. There are far too many opportunities for them to rack up huge bills if you do.
Tips and Tricks
With those things under your belt you should be safe to explore your device and learn all of the great things it can do. Play around, download apps, and have some fun. We’ve compiled some quick reference tips here in case you lose track of all the ways you can interact with your device. Most require iOS 5:
- Double-click the Home button to open the multitasking bar. From here you can switch between open apps or close them completely.
- From the multitasking bar, you can swipe left to set the rotation lock and use media controls.
- To activate Siri, hold down the home button or hold the phone up to your ear while it’s unlocked (iPhone 4S only)
- Double-click the Home button while the device is locked to get quick access to media controls and the camera.
- The volume-up button doubles as the shutter button for the camera. This also means you can use iPhone headphones with volume controls as a tethered shutter button.
- The iPad uses multitouch gestures. Using four or five fingers, you can swipe from side to side to switch between apps, or pinch all your fingers together to close an app. You can also swipe up to bring up the multitasking bar.
- On iPad, you can split the keyboard by dragging it apart from the middle with two fingers and put it back together by dragging the corners back to the middle.
- To bring up the notification menu, drag your finger down from the top of the screen.
- To delete an app, hold your finger on it until it starts wobbling. Then hit the “x” in the corner.
- While the apps are wobbling, you can also drag them to move them around, drag them to the edge of the page to move them to the next page, and drag them on top of each other to create a folder.

With the holiday season upon us, it’s a good time to revisit the basics. If you are the recipient of a new iPhone 4S or iPhone 4, here’s a visual guide on how to set-up your iPhone. If you have an iPhone that is acting up, you can also use this guide to set-up as a new iPhone. The process should not take more than 10 minutes and you can do so without a computer. We’ll outline all of the options presented during the set-up and how to make changes once you are up and running. Let’s get started!
First Steps
- Slide to the right to begin setting up your iPhone. You should allow for 10 minutes or so to set-up your iPhone. However, if at any time you pause the process, your iPhone will let you pick up where you left off.
- Select your language.

Here you have two options. You either enable or disable location services.

Location Services allows Maps, Camera, and other apps to use your location to provide you with a more personal experience. This extends to popular social apps like Twitter and Facebook. Your approximate location is determined using GPS along with corwd-sourced Wi-Fi hotpsot and cell tower locations.
Our Advice: While I’d recommend enabling location services, I’d use common sense when using this feature. When you publicly tweet your location or check-in, be cognizant of who might see that information.
WiFi Networks
You can select your home network and your iPhone will use WiFi when in range. Select your home network and enter your password. If you are outside of the area of your home network, you can bypass this in the set-up and select ‘Use Cellular Connection’.

Our Advice: Current plans are capped, meaning you have a set amount of data usage per month. If you go beyond that number, you could incur additional charges. By enabling WiFi, your iPhone will use your WiFi network (when available). Not only will this result in faster download speeds, but it won’t count towards your monthly data usage.

Our advice: If you previously set up your iPhone, the two restore buttons will bring back your apps, media and data from the last time you synced your iPhone. Your Apple ID is what you’ll use for your iTunes, iCloud and App Store accounts. An Apple ID is the login you use for just about everything you do with Apple. If you have previously setup an iTunes account, you’ll want to use that login ID here. You’ll use your Apple ID to purchase apps, music and books.

Set Up iCloud
iCloud stores your photos, apps, contacts, calendars and more. It will also push that content to your other devices and computers. By enabling iCloud, you can use Apple’s Photo Stream. Photos that you take with your iPhone will push photos over Wifi to other devices.

Our advice: Enabling iCloud allows for a stress-free life of syncing. Changes you make on one device are automatically synced to other devices, so you your information is always up to date. Photo Stream allows you to instantly enjoy your photos on other devices. With an Apple TV, it’s easy to see your latest photos on the big screen in mere sections.

You can select to backup the contents of your iPhone to iCloud. iCloud will automatically back up your iPhone over Wi-Fi when it’s connected to a power source. You should note that any purchased music, apps or books don’t count against your free 5GB of iCloud storage. Of course, you do have an option to back-up to your computer.

Our advice: This is a personal decision. I personally back up to my personal computer. If you have data that exceeds the 5GB free iCloud storage, Apple will allow you to purchase additional storage. You can purchase 20GB for $40 per year, 50GB for $100 a year. These quantities are in addition to your free 5GB. So your totals would be 25GB and 55GB respectively, depending on the plan you select. Additional storage can be purchased direction from your iPhone by selecting Settings > Storage & Backup > Buy More Storage.

Should you lose or misplace your iPhone, you can use a computer or iOS device to locate it using Apple’s free Find My iPhone service.

Our advice: Select ‘Use Find My iPhone’. It’s a great service if it were paid. The fact that’s it is completely free makes this selection a no-brainer.

Wow! This game absolutely sucked! It was hilarious watching this little app try tho... Especially funny when my thought was a monkey, and the little app guessed.... A ballerina!!! Hilarious!!! But I gift it 1 star cuz it made me laugh, and cuz it's free. It's still not worth it unless you have a sense of humor like me......

The autoscroll feature and the multi-touch pan and zoom make it super easy to draw! You don't need to switch tools nearly as much and the larger screen make this one of my favorite apps on the iPad!

Sirius changed their web player, not pocket tunes fault. Be patient this just happened within the last week. Give them time to address it. Some of you people just amaze me.
Satellite busted

UUGGHH!!!
I played it and its awesome!!! Then i updated it...and it stinks!!! It wont even open! I tap it and a black screen comes up for half a second and then it goes back to the homescreen!!! PLZ FIX THIS!!!

Disappointed
I love the original moron test so I downloaded the new one & started playing last night. I got through the second board & started playing again this morning to get more stars on the first board. It keeps freezing & closing right at the beginning & erased my progress.

A great app but.....
Love this app played trough it 3 times. Just wish they would come out with the entire saga. the bosses should be harder more guns and a longer story. Other than those, an amazing app. Ur balls will explode with amazment Action pack thrillride of the year.

Finally Great
I have been playing this poker game for over one year and there was never real support for the ipad. Finally it now has a full page layout for all devices and the look is much smoother. Also allows you to go to another app while playing poker and you will recieve an alert in that app when it is your turn to bet. Best poker app hands down!

Not that fun
not the original and u will get rid of the App right after you play it once or twice. P.s. I wouldn't ever pay money for this
Good fun, but.......
It works.......and then it doesn't. I loved this game back when I was younger and this really takes me back, but I can get a screen or 2 in and then it shuts off. Sometimes, I can't even get in it. It's hit or miss. Once I'm in, though, it's totally tubular, fer sure! ; )

Horrible app..not worth the 99 cents..if you accidentally get into the other games tab you can never return back to the game.. Game only gets past the intro..and then stops and kicks you out...not recommended..:-(..to bad this was a great game when I was younger..
